The Gilstrap, Newark - Registration Office

About the venue

Standing on the site of the former Newark Castle, The Gilstrap’s setting provides the perfect backdrop for any wedding photograph. This impressive building has two ceremony rooms, but the grand and spacious Salvin Suite steals the show with its high ceiling and stained glass windows.

The Library ceremony room is a popular choice for smaller weddings. The Victorian ornamental gardens and bandstand, overlooking the River Trent, also add to the overall ambience.

This venue has a licence for ceremonies in the:

  • The Salvin Suite - 100 people
  • The Library Room - 20 people

The Tolney Lane car park is a short walk across the bridge opposite to the Castle ruin.

Important information

Newark and Sherwood District Council's Newark Castle Gatehouse Project. 

Due to ongoing restoration works, a limited section of the gardens will remain open (subject to any works required in this area), however, the remainder of the grounds will remain closed for the duration of the project.

Please be aware - there are significant renovation works to the Newark Castle Gatehouse due to start towards the end of 2024 for approximately 18 months.

Newark Castle grounds are managed by Newark and Sherwood District Council and as such we have no control over access to them. The grounds are open to the public and at times throughout the year will host public events. Some of these events are ticketed and may give access to ticket holders only. Given the nature of such a historical building, there will also be times when the Castle is subject to maintenance and other building works which may require areas to be fenced off from the public. These works may include scaffolding and other visual signs of maintenance equipment. Whilst we will try to advise of any known events and works taking place, it is your responsibility to check with them in advance should you wish to be aware of any events or restrictions. Newark and Sherwood District Council reserve the right to organise events at short notice which may prohibit or limit access. Nottinghamshire Registration Service will not waive any fees for cancellation or amendments to ceremony bookings in relation to access to the castle and its grounds.
